- Car Seat Mirror or Video Monitor: Allows you to keep an eye on your baby while driving (which is important for your trek!).
- Window Sun Shades: Protects your baby from direct sunlight and keeps the car cooler. Not to mention, aids in keeping a darker atmosphere for naptime in the car.
2. Comfort and Entertainment
- Blankets and Soft Toys: Familiar items can help soothe and comfort your baby when they are out of the comfort of home.
- Portable White Noise Machine: Helps drown out road noise or the radio and keeps your baby calm.
- Interactive Toys: Soft, safe toys that can attach to the car seat will keep your baby entertained. It’s never a bad idea to throw in a few new ones for the car ride to pique your baby’s interest.
3. Feeding Essentials
- Bottles and Formula/Breast Milk: Bring pre-measured formula or stored breast milk in a cooler bag. You can also get portable bottle warmers on Amazon which are a lifesaver for car rides or being out and about.
- Snacks: Age-appropriate snacks for older babies – it’s best if they are low mess and easy to take along/prepare.
- Bibs and Burp Cloths: Multiple bibs and cloths to handle any messes (overpack these just in case!).

- Diapers and Wipes: Pack more than you think you’ll need – you never know what can happen and you should always be prepared!
- Portable Changing Pad: A portable changing pad is a must for quick diaper changes – a life changer!
- Diaper Cream: Helps prevent and treat diaper rash which they could be more prone to sitting in the car. Grab some travel-sized samples from your pediatricians office or purchase some here!
- Disposable Diaper Bags: For easy and hygienic disposal of dirty diapers – again, another life changer.
- Car Organizer: Keep all of the important stuff where it’s easy to reach, all organized in a compact car caddy.
5. Clothing and Weather Gear
- Extra Outfits: Accidents happen, so pack several changes of clothes. Pack these in an easy-to-access place so you’re not stuck rummaging around through countless bags and items!
- Weather-Appropriate Gear: Hats, mittens, and blankets for colder weather; sunscreen, sun hat, and lightweight clothing for warmer weather. Check the weather where you are headed well in advance and pack each a colder and warmer weather outfit in case it’s colder or warmer a day than what you thought. Again, preparation is key!
- Travel-Sized Stain Treater: You never know when an accidental mess will happen so it’s better to plan for the worst!

- First Aid Kit: Include baby-specific items like a digital thermometer, infant acetaminophen, and any prescription medications. Always at least have a basic first aid kit available in the car for emergencies.
- Hand Sanitizer: For quick clean-ups – I clip mine right on my diaper bag for easy access.
- Pacifiers: If your baby uses one, bring a few extras in case they get lost or dirty.
8. Travel Documents and Miscellaneous
- Health Insurance Card and Pediatrician’s Contact Information: In case of an emergency.
- Travel Documents and Itinerary: Make sure you have all of your IDs and a copy of your travel plans and accommodations if applicable.
